I was invited to visit Laos by my friend Eva Pritscher who had been living and working there for three years. She strongly suggested that I should see the caves in Viengxay.
My way to Laos in February 2025 led me from Thailand via the Mekong River. I wanted to document the long way it took to get there: down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang and finally to the capitol, Vientiane. Viengxay is not easy to reach, a plane is the best solution.
In the beginning it was just a name: Viengxay caves, the “birthplace of the Lao PDR.”
Thousands and thousands of people were living inside the mountains, every second aware of how precious life can be, not only under attack. There are monstrous doors,
protecting people from poisonous gas, air cleaning machines, bathrooms and toilets. The book is an attempt to document my journey.
